Note : this is the description file of the original catalog. This HTML page corresponds well to the original description, but some minor changes in the format may have been introduced in the FITS output files in order to allow for arithmetic operations on quantities such as coordinates and times. h:m:s and d:m:s units are normally converted into degrees, and YYYY-MM-DD into julian days.
Similarly, some slight changes may have been introduced in the units; the value given in the HTML files supersedes the value indicated in the ReadMe file for this catalogue.

Description:
The catalog is a compilation of ten published lists of compact groups
of compact galaxies found on the Palomar Sky Survey red charts. The
catalog contains 377 groups of compact galaxies and includes
identifications, equatorial coordinates, numbers of constituent
galaxies, magnitudes of the brightest member, sizes of the groups as a
whole, and coefficients of relative compactness.

Note on Ngal: in the published lists, this number was frequently stated as a range; these ranges were apparently converted to their median value. Note on Cmpct: this coefficient is the ratio of the sum of the diameters of all the galaxies of the group to the diameter of the group as a whole. Note that this coefficient is rounded compared to the publications for objects 306 to 377.
Nomenclature Notes: Various acronyms are found in the literature to designate the objects from this catalogue: Shk (recommended acronym, from first author's name) SCGG (Shakhbazian, Compact Group of G) SHCG (Shakhbazian, Cluster of G) History: * The catalogue was received at CDS in 1986. It was checked and corrected against the published catalogue at Astronomical Data Center (ADC), NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt. * Further checks were performed in November 1993 by Marion Schmitz at IPAC mschmitz@ipac.caltech.edu and Heinz Andernach hja@vilspa.esa.es Acknowledgements: It is a pleasure to thank Heinz Andernach and Marion Schmitz for their careful verification of the catalog. ================================================================================ (End) Francois Ochsenbein [CDS] 05-Sep-1996
