Note : this is the description file of the original catalog.
This HTML page corresponds well to the original description, but some minor
changes in the format may have been introduced in the FITS output
files in order to allow for arithmetic operations on quantities
such as coordinates and times. h:m:s and d:m:s units are normally
converted into degrees, and YYYY-MM-DD into julian days.
Similarly, some slight changes may have been introduced in the
units; the value given in the HTML files supersedes the value indicated in the ReadMe
file for this catalogue.

Abstract:
The largest Local Group spiral galaxy, M31, has been completely
imaged for the first time, obtaining a luminosity lower limit about
1035erg/s in the 0.2-4.5keV band. Our XMM-Newton EPIC survey
combines archival observations along the major axis, from June 2000 to
July 2004, with observations taken between June 2006 and February 2008
that cover the remainder of the D25 ellipse. The main goal of the
paper is to study X-ray source populations of M31.
An X-ray catalogue of 1897(*) sources was created with 914 detected
for the first time. Source classification and identification were
based on X-ray hardness ratios, spatial extent of the sources, and
cross correlation with catalogues in the X-ray, optical, infrared and
radio wavelengths. We also analysed the long-term variability of the
X-ray sources and this variability allows us to distinguish between
X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei (AGN). Furthermore,
supernova remnant classifications of previous studies that did not
use long-term variability as a classification criterion could be
validated. Including previous Chandra and ROSAT observations in the
long-term variability study allowed us to detect additional transient
or at least highly variable sources, which are good candidate X-ray
binaries.
(*) the final catalog of table5 icludes 1948 sources.

Global notes:
Note (G2): Count rate and flux in XID band (0.2-4.5keV)
Note (G3): HRi=(R(i+1)-R(i))/(R(i+1)+R(i)) where Ri are the count rates
in the energy bands 1 to 5 and
band 1 = 0.2-0.5keV,
band 2 = 0.5-1.0keV,
band 3 = 1.0-2.0keV,
band 4 = 2.0-4.5keV,
band 5 = 4.5-12keV
Note (G4): First character for EPIC PN, second for MOS1, third for MOS2;
the letters are 'T' (true, source is in field of view of instrument),
or 'F' (false) otherwise.
